What are the new northern pike regulations from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for the 2018-2019 Fishing Season? We have the information straight from the new MN DNR Regulations book.

Here is a recap:

“The statewide possession and size limit for northern pike on inland waters has been replaced. The state is now divided into three zones, and each zone has its own specific regulation for harvesting northern pike.”

Per the 2018 Minnesota Fishing Regulations from the MN DNR:

NORTHEAST ZONE: is defined as north and east of U.S. Highway 53 from Duluth to International Falls.

NORTH-CENTRAL/SOUTHERN BOUNDARY: from the South Dakota Border – State Highway 7 at Ortonville – east past Hutchinson, south on State Highway 22 in Glencoe, east on U.S. Norhern Pike AreasHighway 212 to Chaska, south on State Highway 41 to the Minnesota River to the Mississippi River to the Wisconsin border. The waters of the Minnesota or Mississippi rivers where those waters create the North-central/Southern Boundary are included in the Southern Zone.

The Inland Water Season and Limits for Northern Pike effective as of May 12, 2018 has been replaced. It is now divided into three zones and each zone has its own specific regulation for harvesting northern pike. (This does not change possession limits on border waters or experimental/special regulation waters.)

The Minnesota Northern Pike season is from May 12, 2018 – February 24, 2019.

The angling possession limit (size) for each zone is as follows.

NORTHEAST ZONE: 2 (Not more than 1 over 40″ in possession. All from 30-40″ must be immediately released.)

NORTH-CENTRAL ZONE: 10 (Not more than 2 over 26″. All from 22-26″ must be immediately released.)

SOUTHERN ZONE: 2 (Minimum size 24″.)

North Star Lake continues to have a special regulation to continue to allow the trophy northerns to grow! North Star Lake, including Little North Star Lake (Itasca County) northern pike regulation: all from 24-36″ must be immediately released. Possession limit is three, only one over 36″.
